Why are the meals priced as they are?

Fresh fruit and veggies and organic meats aren't cheap. Plus, real live humans to source, prepare, transport, and clean up every day is not comparable to a sandwich produced at Safeway or a takeout buffet at Whole Foods, etc, but even there it would be surprising to find this quality for this price.

What if my child doesn't like what's offered?

Picture
We suggest you use the program to gently nudge your child to eat a wider range of foods!  There might be a few complaints at first, but far less than at the dinner table! We sometimes have adults on hand to encourage experimentation, but we're social animals, and seeing their friends and teachers taking what's offered makes a difference.

What about the leftovers?

They are donated daily to Harrison House Emergency Shelter or Meals on Wheels as part of our ongoing support of their programs.

My child has food sensitivities. Can she still participate in the lunch program?

Picture
We make sure your child has good options EVERY day. Reach out directly to us about your child's food allergies, sensitivities or special needs, and we'll take it from there.

What if my child misses days due to illness, doctor's appointments, or travel?

Picture
We have bought ingredients and cooked those meals for your child. Sorry!

That said, with a week's notice, we can adjust our purchasing quantities and give you a credit for those meals.

Does "vegetarian option" mean
sad-looking tofu dogs?

Picture
No way!  The menu features a wide range of lean protein, including tofu, nuts, lentils, kidney, aduki and black beans, plus high-protein grains like quinoa and kamut. So even if the menu says "chicken this" or "pork that", there's a real veggie option. Chef Joan makes an effort to provide good lactose-free and gluten-free options.

Gosh!  This sounds awesome!  Can I help in any way?

Picture
Wow, hey, great, sure. Drop in (one lunch on the house!) and experience first hand what your kids are eating (let us know, first!)  The younger kids can always use some help.

What about meals my child misses for field trips?

Picture
EBSB: Your school is avoiding scheduling field trips on hot lunch days/times.

BPC: Your plan accounts for all scheduled field trips, and typically has credits built into the subscriptions to account for schedule changes.
